Ahmed Naji

I sincerely thank the Sawiris Cultural Award jury for selecting my novel ‘The Happy Endings’ for the youth’s Best Novel category. I am proud of this achievement because this award is one of the few Arabic literary awards given by a non-governmental organization, and I am honored to have my name join the list of winners known for their distinguished and extraordinary writings.

This award comes amidst a deluge of tragedies affecting our people, from civil wars to the brutal rule of sheiks and military militias across our Arab countries and the systematic genocide of the Palestinian people and the people of Gaza. This makes any celebration or joy taste like ash in the throat. Therefore, I announce my donation of the monetary value of the award to the people of Gaza.

This donation remains insignificant due to the continued closure of borders and the Rafah Crossing. It’s a disgrace that will haunt us all and for which we will bear the guilt of participating (even by silence) in genocide, both as a people and a government.

Beside

In addition to the tens of thousands of children, women, and men from Gaza who are killed daily by Israel, the cultural movement and the Arab literary scene have lost artists and writers targeted by Israel. I grieve and honor each of them: Novelist, poet, and educator Heba Abu Nada. Poet and novelist Omar Faris Abu Shaweesh. Poet, writer and literature professor Dr. Refaat Alareer. Writer and Palestinian heritage advocate Abdul Karim Al-Hashash. Playwright, actor, and educator: Inas al-Saqa. Writer, journalist, and photographer Yousef Dawas. poet and writer Nour al-Din Hajjaj. Poet and writer Saleem Al-Naffar

And the massacre is still ongoing. As writers, our minimal duty is not only to mention the names of our fellow writers and poets who are being exterminated by Israel but also to stand in solidarity and demand an end to the genocide and the opening of the Rafah crossing.

أتوجه بالشكر إلى لجنة تحكيم جائزة ساويرس الثقافية التي اختارت روايتي “النهاية السعيدة” لجائزة أفضل رواية فئة الشباب. أعتز بذلك الفوز لأن تلك الجائزة هي واحدة من الجوائز الأدبية العربية القليلة التي تُمنح من قِبل مؤسسة أهلية لا جهة حكومية، وأتشرف أن ينضم اسمي إلى قائمة الفائزين بالجائزة التي عُرفت باختياراتها الإبداعية المتميزة والمغامرة.

يأتي هذا الفوز في ظل طوفان من المآسي تعيشه شعوبنا، من الحروب الأهلية إلى توحش حكم المشيخات والميليشيات العسكرية، والإبادة الممنهجة للشعب الفلسطيني وأهل غزة، وهو ما يجعل أي احتفال أو فرح بطعم الرماد في الحلق، لذا أعلن التبرع بالقيمة المادية للجائزة لصالح أهل غزة.

هذا التبرع يظل بلا قيمة، في ظل استمرار غلق الحدود ومعبر رفح، وهو عار سيلاحقنا جميعًا وسنتحمل وزر المشاركة في الإبادة شعبًا وحكومة.

إلى جانب عشرات الآلاف من الأطفال والنساء والرجال من أهل غزة الذين قتلتهم وتقتلهم إسرائيل يوميًا، فقدت الحركة الثقافية والمشهد الأدبي العربي، فنانين وكتاب استهدفتهم اسرائيل؛ أبرزهم حتى الآن: الشاعرة هبه أبو ندى، الشاعر والروائي عمر أبو شاويش، الشاعر والكاتب رفعت العرعير، الكاتب والمؤرخ عبد الكريم عيد الحشاش، الفنانة والكاتبة المسرحية إيناس السقا، المؤرخ جهاد المصري، الفنان والشاعر يوسف دواس، الشاعر والروائي نور الدين حجاج، الكاتب والمترجم عبد الله العقاد، الشاعر والكاتب سليم النفار.
